Framed Print of The Interview of Charles I With His Children, 1649, (early-mid 19th century). Creator: J Rogers

The Interview of Charles I With His Children. (During His Misfortunes in the Presence of Oliver Cromwell), 1649, (early-mid 19th century). Oliver Cromwell watches as the captive King Charles I is permitted a visit from his family: Queen Henrietta Maria, Princes James and Charles, and Mary, Princess Royal. Charles I (1600-1649) was King of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1625 until his execution in 1649. He engaged in a struggle for power with the Parliament of England which resulted in the English Civil Wars. The royalists were defeated and Charles was captured, tried, convicted, and executed for high treason. The monarchy was abolished and the Commonwealth of England was declared. Charless son, Charles II, became King after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. [John Tallis and Company, London and New York].
