The Imposture of the Holy Maid of Kent, 16th century, (1796), (mid 19th century)

The Imposture of the Holy Maid of Kent, 16th century, (1796), (mid 19th century). Elizabeth Barton (1506?-1534, known variously as The Nun of Kent, The Holy Maid of London, The Holy Maid of Kent and later The Mad Maid of Kent), was a Catholic nun who claimed to have received revelations from God. An opponent of King Henry VIII of England's Reformation of the Church, she prophesied that the king would die shortly afterwards if he was to marry Anne Boleyn. Supporters of the king had discredited Elizabeth by spreading rumours that she had engaged in sexual relationships with priests and had her arrested. After her arrest she confessed (possibly under coercion) that her revelations had been fabricated, and was executed for treason. [John Tallis & Company, London & New York]

The Interview of Charles I With His Children, 1649, (early-mid 19th century). Creator: J Rogers

The Interview of Charles I With His Children. (During His Misfortunes in the Presence of Oliver Cromwell), 1649, (early-mid 19th century). Oliver Cromwell watches as the captive King Charles I is permitted a visit from his family: Queen Henrietta Maria, Princes James and Charles, and Mary, Princess Royal. Charles I (1600-1649) was King of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1625 until his execution in 1649. He engaged in a struggle for power with the Parliament of England which resulted in the English Civil Wars. The royalists were defeated and Charles was captured, tried, convicted, and executed for high treason. The monarchy was abolished and the Commonwealth of England was declared. Charles's son, Charles II, became King after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. [John Tallis & Company, London & New York]
