The Interview of Charles I With His Children, 1649, (early-mid 19th century). Creator: J Rogers

The Interview of Charles I With His Children. (During His Misfortunes in the Presence of Oliver Cromwell), 1649, (early-mid 19th century). Oliver Cromwell watches as the captive King Charles I is permitted a visit from his family: Queen Henrietta Maria, Princes James and Charles, and Mary, Princess Royal. Charles I (1600-1649) was King of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1625 until his execution in 1649. He engaged in a struggle for power with the Parliament of England which resulted in the English Civil Wars. The royalists were defeated and Charles was captured, tried, convicted, and executed for high treason. The monarchy was abolished and the Commonwealth of England was declared. Charles's son, Charles II, became King after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. [John Tallis & Company, London & New York]

The defeat of the Spanish Armada, 1588 (c1857).Artist: J Rogers

The defeat of the Spanish Armada, 1588 (c1857). The Armada, a fleet of 130 ships under the command of the Duke of Medina Sidonia was intended to protect an invasion force commanded by the Duke of Parma as it crossed the English Channel. Harrassment from the smaller, more manoeuvrable vessels of the British Navy, the use of fireships and unfavourable weather conditions meant that the Armada could not achieve its objective of guaranteeing Parma's barges safe passage across the Channel. Ultimately the Armada was swept up the North Sea and much of it was destroyed in storms around the coasts of Scotland and Ireland. From England's Battles by Sea and Land, volume IV, by Lieutenant Colonel William Freke Williams, published by the London Printing and Publishing Company, 1857
