The Spanish capture Fort Caroline, 1565 (1631)

The Spanish capture Fort Caroline, 1565 (1631). Fort Caroline was a settlement established by the Franch near present day Jacksonville, Florida, in 1564. Considering the settlement a challenge to their claim on Florida, the Spanish attacked the settlement the following year and massacred the garrison, only sparing around 50 women and children. From Mewe Welt und Americanische Historien by Johann Ludwig Gottfried, published by Mattaeus Merian. (Frankfurt, 1631)
