Dress worn by Marie Monroe of Rosewood, Florida, 1923. Creator: Unknown

This dress belonged to Marie Monroe, a young woman who lived in Rosewood, Florida, during the 1923 Rosewood Massacre, a racially motivated massacre of black people and destruction of a black town in Florida, USA. At least six black people and two white people were killed, though eyewitness accounts suggested a higher death toll of 27 to 150. A green and cream checked A-line dress with black trimmings worn by Marie Monroe. The dress has a split-front neckline with a folded collar and straight-cut fitted sleeves that end below the elbow. The body of the dress is blousy and has a drop waist and pleated skirt with the hem falling mid-calf. The dress is made from a semi-sheer light green fabric with darker green and cream woven checks. Black woven tape is sewn in a rectangle around the split-neck, on the edges of the collar, in double lines on the cuffs of each sleeve, and around the drop waistline. The waist is scalloped, with two bottom points on the front and back at each side. The skirt has a box pleat extending from each of these points. The dress has no closure method, it slips on over the wearer's head. It is not lined

Scene during Tulsa Race Riot June 1st 1921'. Creator: Unknown

On May 31 and June 1, 1921, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, mobs of white residents brutally attacked the African American community of Greenwood, colloquially known as "Black Wall Street," in the deadliest racial massacre in U.S. history. Amidst the violence, both white rioters and the Oklahoma National Guard rounded up black residents of Greenwood and forced them to detention centers. More than 6,000 African Americans were interned at the Convention Hall, the Tulsa County Fairgrounds, and the baseball stadium McNulty Park. Some were held for as long as eight days.;Photo postcards of the Tulsa Race Massacre were widely distributed following the massacre in 1921. Like postcards depicting lynchings, these souvenir cards were powerful declarations of white racial power and control. Decades later, the cards served as evidence for community members working to recover the forgotten history of the riot and secure justice for its victims and their descendants

The Armenian Massacres of 1915, First World War, (c1920). Creator: Unknown

The Armenian Massacres of 1915, First World War, (c1920). Map showing Armenia, and parts of Turkey, Russia and Syria: Every place marked in this map, with the exception of those included in square brackets, was the scene of deportations, or massacres, or both, between April and November 1915. (Dhimstika, Malgara, and Keshan, in Thrace, are too far west to be included, but they must be added to the list). The nine places underlined were the destinations marked out, for such of the deported Armenians as reached them, as waiting-places for death. 1.5 million Armenians, mostly citizens within the Ottoman Empire, were murdered in the systematic extermination which came to be known as the Armenian Genocide, or Armenian Holocaust. From "The Great World War - A History" Volume IV, edited by Frank A Mumby. [The Gresham Publishing Company Ltd, London, c1920]
