Floating Railway across the Forth, between Granton and Burntisland, [near Edinburgh, Scotland], 1850. View of the...Leviathan, as the vessel is called...lying alongside the east side of Granton Pier, with the landing slip and apparatus for drawing off a train...upwards of twenty loaded waggons, and a passenger carriage [of the Edinburgh, Perth and Dundee Railway]...were ferried across the Forth...this mode of crossing...without changing carriages...is expected to render this the most agreeable route to and from the north of Scotland. Goods, minerals [passengers], and livestock will new be conveyed across the ferry without removal from the trucks...the method...was designed and executed under the instruction of Mr. Bouch, the manager of the line...The railway and the engines were constructed by Mr. Robert Napier, of Glasgow...'.
