Among the most successful early engines marketed in the United States were those designed and built by aviation pioneer and inventor Glenn Curtiss in his factory in Hammondsport, New York. Early Curtiss engines were designed to power motorcycles. The Curtiss V-X was manufactured in Hammondsport and Buffalo beginning in 1915 to power the R series of Curtiss biplanes, especially the R-6 and R-9 training seaplanes and R-4 training landplane. Modified examples of the latter type were used by the Army in its 1916 operations on the Mexican border and for carrying U.S. mail. With the advent of World War I, Curtiss concentrated its production on the 67 kW (90 hp). OX-5 engine which powered the JN-4D Jenny trainer aircraft. The U.S. Governments Liberty engine fulfilled the need for a higher power engine; therefore, the V-X engines were phased out before reaching large-scale production. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
