The Workmens Train, 1872
The Workmens Train, 1872. This picture shows steam trains at Gower Street station on the Metropolitan (underground) railway which opened in 1863. Workers hurry to catch their morning train to work. From London: A Pilgrimage by Gustave Dore and Blanchard Jerrold. (London, 1872). A Pilgrimage was a comprehensive portrait of London, but although the book was a commercial success many of the critics disliked it. Several were upset that Jerrold and Dore had concentrated on the poverty that existed in London
