Quarters for infantry at the camp of Chalons, [France] - from a drawing by M. Beauce, 1860. It must not be supposed that the barracks here represented are for all the infantry, which is for the most part under canvas. The constructions shown in our Engraving are, however, so called, and are usually occupied by the Imperial Guard when it is present at the camp for the autumn manoeuvres. The intervals separating each cluster of building serve for exercising-grounds, and in one of them some soldiers of the line in undress uniform are seen going through their performance under the eyes of the ever-severe drill-sergeant. The number of these barracks, arrayed as streets, is being increased, and they will probably be employed as winter quarters for the accommodation of several regiments of infantry'.
