Framed Print of The Prince of Wales at Holyhead: view of the new dock from the clock-tower, 1880. Creator: Unknown

The Prince of Wales at Holyhead [in Wales]: view of the new dock from the clock-tower, 1880. Formal opening by the Prince of Wales of the enlarged Holyhead Old Harbour. The works now finished are those for the accommodation of the railway company's steamers plying to Kingstown for Dublin...What is now provided will give separate and distinct passenger platforms, quay walls, goods sheds, and sidings, respectively, for the export and import traffic of the harbour, and for the up and down traffic of the railway...Passing through a covered way lined by the Anglesey militia, his Royal Highness...boarded the Lily steamer. Her passing out to sea announced that the harbour was formally opened. The cheers amidst which his Royal Highness left the dock were taken up in succession by all the company's vessels lying at anchor, by the crowds on shore...It was a charming sight, the shores lined with lively crowds of spectators, the long series of vessels all dressed out for the day and the fine coast scenery with the cliffs, the South Stack and its lighthouse...The chairman...proposed prosperity to the Irish railways in connection with the North-Western system. Mr. Murland, chairman of the Great Western Railway of Ireland, returned thanks'. From Illustrated London News, 1880.
