Framed Print of The late Lieutenant Maurice O'Connell, 1881. Creator: Unknown.
The late Lieutenant Maurice O'Connell, 1881. Creator: Unknown

The late Lieutenant Maurice O'Connell, 1881. British officer killed...during the recent campaign against the Boers of the Transvaal on the Natal border. Lieutenant Maurice O'Connell...served with the third battalion of the 60th Rifles throughout the Zula war, and obtained the medal and clasp granted to the troops engaged in it. In December last Lieutenant O'Connell was at Durban, under orders to embark for England in charge of invalids, when intelligence reached that station of the outbreak of hostilities in the Transvaal. He instantly applied for and obtained permission to proceed to the front, where he was present at the engagement of Laing's Neck on Jan. 28. The high popularity which Lieutenant O'Connell had gained in the militia corps of his native county followed him into the Rifles, where he speedily won the esteem of both officers and men by his warm-hearted and generous disposition. He was but twenty-two years of age when he was killed in battle; and few of the gallant soldiers who fell in this last South African war will be more sincerely regretted, as well in the regiment as amongst those who knew him at home'.
