Explosion at the King's Bastion, Portsmouth, on Monday last, October 1844

Explosion at the King's Bastion, Portsmouth, on Monday last, October 1844. A fatal accident...As the Artillerymen were re-loading one of the guns...the charge went off, and blew one of them to pieces and the other was so horribly mutilated that he died soon afterwards. The guns upon this bastion are 32-pounders...to fire a royal salute requires each gun to be loaded five times and one six. It is usual to use the worm to clear out the gun, every second charge, and it is supposed some fire had remained in the chamber....Miller was blown into fragments, and Walker had his thigh bioken, his arm blown off into the moat, and his body otherwise disfigured. The remnants of the victims were conveyed instantly to the hospital of the Royal Marine Barracks...An inquest was held on the bodies of the unfortunate men...and the jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death"'. Accident at Nottingham, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Accident at Nottingham, 1844. A crowd had assembled to witness the public execution of William Saville for the murder of his wife and children. Afterwards there was a stampede down a narrow street: The place where the execution took place is in a confined street called High Pavement, between 20 and 30 feet wide, and at the distance of about 100 yards is an avenue, called Gamer's-hill, a very steep descent, with five or six steps at the top. As soon as the drop fell, the crowd rushed violently along High Pavement, and hurled a number of persons down the steps. Eight were taken up dead from suffocation, four have died since. Another account states that in all 30 persons were seriously injured'. From "Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

The Death of Harold, 1902

The Death of Harold, 1902. Death of King Harold, Battle of Hastings, 1066 (1864). Harold II (c1022-1066) was nominated as his successor as King of Angles and Saxons by Edward the Confessor. His claim to the throne was disputed by William of Normandy, however, who landed at Pevensey, Sussex with an army on 28 September 1066. William and Harold's armies met in battle on Senlac Hill, 6 miles inland from Hastings, on 14 October, with the Normans winning the day. According to legend, Harold was killed by an arrow which struck him in the eye. After a work by Patten Wilson (1869-1934). From A Child's History of England by Charles Dickens [J. M. Dent & Co., New York, 1902]. (Colorised black and white print)
