John Ruskin, 1853-1854, (1944). Creator: John Everett Millais
John Ruskin, 1853-1854, (1944). Portrait of English artist, critic and author John Ruskin (1819-1900), by his friend John Everett Millais. It was painted at Brig o Turk, in the Trossachs near Stirling in Scotland, and the frequent rain and plagues of midges made the experience trying for both sitter and painter. To complicate matters further, Millais was falling in love with Ruskins wife Effie. She left Ruskin and married Millais, and Ruskin eventually gave the picture to his old Oxford friend Sir Henry Acland. Painting in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. From " British Portrait Painters", by John Russell. [Collins, London, 1944]
