Interior of Whitby Abbey, c1915. Artist: William Callow
Interior of Whitby Abbey, c1915. Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire, 2009. The first abbey at Whitby was founded in 657 by Oswy, King of Northumbria. It was abandoned in 867 after being ransacked by Vikings. The abbey was refounded in the late 11th century but fell into ruin after it was closed in 1540 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The atmospheric ruins were part of the inspiration behind Bram Stokers novel Dracula, published in 1897. From The Studio Volume 67. [London Offices of the Studio, London, 1916]
