Murder of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, 1844 (c1880). The Mormon Church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) was founded by Joseph Smith in 1830. Smith and his brother Hyrum were murdered by a mob in Illinois in 1844, after which Brigham Young led the Mormons on an 1100-mile journey to Utah.
