The Battle of Waterloo, 1815, (c1850s). French cavalry charging British infantry, 18 June 1815. The final and decisive battle of the Napoleonic Wars, Waterloo marked the end of the French First Empire. After his defeat by the British and Prussians commanded respectively by Wellington and Blucher, Napoleon was exiled to St Helena, where he died in 1821.
