Escape from Captivity, November 1899, (1945). Scene from the Second Boer War (1899-1902). On 15 November 1899, Winston Churchill (1874-1965) was a journalist travelling with a body of British troops at Estcourt, (KwaZulu-Natal Province), South Africa, when their train was ambushed by the Boers. Churchill was among the prisoners. On 12 December he managed to escape from the prison camp in Pretoria by climbing out of the enclosure. This contemporary drawing was made by John Nash RI, from information given to him by Churchill. British politician and statesman Sir Winston Churchill was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, and again from 1951 to 1955.
