On 6 March 1808, the British frigate HMS San Fiorenzo, under the command of Captain George Nicholas Hardinge (1781-1808), embarked on a three day pursuit of the French frigate Piemontaise, resulting in its capture after a battle in the Gulf of Mannar off the south-eastern coast of India.
