Chelsea Bridge, London, 1858

Chelsea Bridge, London, 1858. Thomas Page (1803-1877) was the engineer of this suspension bridge over the Thames, which opened in 1858, connecting Chelsea with Battersea on the south bank of the river. The cost of construction was £ 83, 319. When first opened it was a toll bridge, free for foot traffic on Sundays and Bank Holidays. In 1879 tolls were abolished. The bridge was replaced in the 1930s.
