The War in Naples - Garibaldian troops crossing the Volturno... 1860. Creator: Unknown
The War in Naples - Garibaldian troops crossing the Volturno - from a sketch by our special artist, Frank Vizetelly, 1860. Colin Dowling, assisted by English volunteers, threw a bridge across the Volturno, and the Garibaldian troops commenced crossing on the morning of the 26th October to form their junction with the Sardinian army. The Neapolitans had previously abandoned all their possessions, and had fallen back towards Gaeta. The passage of the Volturno took place without accident - a circumstance no doubt due (says one correspondent) to the shaky appearance of the bridge, which impressed man and beast with due caution. Day was just dawning when the Garibaldini passed this Rubicon. The line of march was the high road from Capua to Isernia, passing through Calvi...On and on the column wound, like a brilliant serpent, with the muskets catching now and then a ray of the sun'.
