The War in Eastern Asia: the Storming of Port Arthur by the Japanese, 1895. Japanese Fleet in the distance; Two Cruiser's and Torpedo-boats; Storming of the Forts by Japanese advance guard; Field Battery. From a Sketch by Mr. B. Meadows-Taylor, H.M.S. "Centurion."... The taking of Port Arthur is so important an event in the war that the following account from an onlooker will be of special interest. Writing from Chefoo, our correspondent says: "Admiral Fremantle left Chefoo with the British squadron early in the afternoon of Nov. 23. The fleet consisted of the Centurion, Undaunted, Crescent and Edgar (the two new first-class cruisers), Leander, Mercury, Severn, Porpoise, and AEolus (new second-class cruiser). The morning of the 24th was occupied in target practice, the Centurion going into Ta-lien-whan Bay, which is occupied by the Japanese for a base of operations against Port Arthur. The fleet reassembled in the afternoon and proceeded towards Port Arthur. The Japanese flag was seen flying over the principal fort and the fleet lying at anchor under the western forts. The English fleet anchored in two lines and paid the Japanese Admiral the compliment of a salute. Admiral Ito came on board the flag-ship, and was received with all honours'. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame.
