The Virgin Annunciate, marble statue, 1519, (1881). Creator: Charles Martin Hodges
The Virgin Annunciate, marble statue, 1519, (1881). Etching of a sculpture of a kneeling woman, made at Lucca, Italy, by Nicolao di Matteo Civitali in the early 16th century. This near-life-size figure with hands in a prayer position was traditionally identified as the Virgin Mary. However her costume and the style of carving do not support this identification. The statue originally formed part of the altar in Santa Maria dei Servi at Lucca. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]
