View of Lima, the capital of Peru, 1864. Creator: Unknown
View of Lima, the capital of Peru, 1864. Engraving from a sketch by David Powell, '...taken from the foot of the hill, San Cristoval, at the end of the old Alameda...The principal buildings...are the cathedral...and the church of San Francisco, which is by far the finest building of its kind in the New World. In the distance we see the high ground of the island of San Lorenzo, protecting the anchorage at Callao. The Alameda, which runs along the river and constitutes the foreground of our View, is, unfortunately, a place to be avoided on account of the rascals who frequent it. The outline of the buildings in Lima is very picturesque; but the detail is very coarse...In the foreground is an iron-foundry, which we may remark as an instance of the European inventions which are coming into general use in these new countries of South America'.
