Sir Bartle Frere, K.C.B. G.C.S.I. 1872. Engraving is from a photograph by John Watkins. This distinguished public servant, who was five years Governor of the Bombay Presidency, now goes to Zanzibar on a special mission from the British Government, to negotiate for the suppression of the East African slave trade. He is a personal friend of Dr. Livingstone, and a leading member of the Royal Geographical Society...[He] was educated at King Edward VI.'s Grammar School, Bath, and at the East India Company's Civil Service Training College, at Haileybury...In 1812, when Sir George Arthur became Governor of Bombay, he chose Mr. Frere for his private secretary...[In] 1850...he was appointed Chief Commissioner for the government of Scinde...In 1862 he was appointed Governor of Bombay...The government of Sir Bartle Frere, to the year 1867, was marked by the execution of many great public works, the establishment of colleges and a University, the amendment of the laws, and the organisation of a municipality for the city of Bombay. On his return to England Sir Bartle Frere was made one of the Council of the Secretary of State for India. He is a Knight Commander of the Bath and Grand Cross of the Order of the Star of India'. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
