The Prince of Wales riveting the last bolt of the Alexandra Railway Bridge in the Punjaub...1876. Creator: Unknown
The Prince of Wales riveting the last bolt of the Alexandra Railway Bridge in the Punjaub, from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. The future King Edward VII in India....the Prince in the act of hammering the last rivet of...a new railway bridge over the Chenab river...he was attired in the blue undress uniform of a Field Marshal. After this performance his Royal Highness entered a special train, which crossed and re-crossed the bridge. The hammer was presented to him in a casket of handsome workmanship, bearing a Persian inscription, which referred to the utility of this work, and the benefits of British rule in the Punjaub. The Prince and his companions, with about three hundred guests, partook of lunch in a banquet-hall at the Wuzeerabad [Wazirabad] station. From "Illustrated London News", 1876
