Edward I, King of England from 1272, (1932). Edward (1239-1307) was popularly known as Longshanks because of his 6 foot 2 inch (1.88 m) frame, and the Hammer of the Scots. He came to the throne of England on November 21, 1272 after the death of his father, Henry III.
