Laying the Foundation-Stone of Blackfriars Bridge, 1760, (1897). Blackfriars Bridge took took nine years to build, opening to the public in 1769. It was the third bridge across the River Thames in London, supplementing the ancient London Bridge and Westminster Bridge. Here various dignitaries are assembled for the stone-laying ceremony, with cheering crowds and a cannon being fired in the background. From Old and New London, Volume I, by Walter Thornbury.
