The late Lieut. F. H. Eardley-Wilmot, R.A. 1874. Engraving from a photograph by Mr. A. Bassano. This gallant young officer [of the Royal Artillery], of whose late heroic death we must all have read with mingled feelings of enthusiasm and sorrow...was among the foremost to volunteer for the Ashantee war...On his arrival...he was employed in the almost hopeless task of training a small body of natives in the use of the Gatling gun...Coming soon upon a large body of Ashantees, a heavy and well-sustained fire was opened upon them. Early in the fray, Lieutenant Eardley-Wilmot received a severe wound, completely disabling the use of his arm; but, retiring for a minute to have it bound up, he was soon again at the head of his men, endeavouring by the example of his own intrepid conduct to kindle a faint spark of courage in their hearts, and firing the rockets himself with his now sole remaining arm...A bullet...struck poor Wilmot in the region of the heart, and, raising his unwounded arm above his head, he fell on his face and instantly expired...Thus fell Wilmot, the first victim in our Ashantee war, adding one more to that splendid list of England's heroes who have died gloriously, sword in hand and with their face to the enemy From Illustrated London News, 1874. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
