Hoxton Division, 1899. James Stuart (1843-1913) British mathematician and engineer, champion of university education for women. He was appointed to the new chair of Mechanism and Applied Mathematics at Cambridge, England, in 1875, resigning in 1890. In this post, with minimal help from the University, he established Engineering as a subject for study at Cambridge. He was elected MP for Hackney, London, in 1884, and was rector of St Andrews University, Scotland, 1892-1901. Cartoon from Vanity Fair. (London, 5 October 1899)
