General McClellan at the battle of Antietam, American Civil War, 1862 (c1880)
General McClellan at the battle of Antietam, American Civil War, 1862 (c1880). George Brinton McClellan (1826-1885) was commanding general of the Union army in the early part of the American Civil War. The Battle of Antietam, fought on 17 September 1862, was the first battle of the war to be fought on Union (northern) soil. It was the bloodiest single day battle in American history, with nearly 23, 000 casualties. Frustrated by what he perceived as his excessive caution, President Lincoln relieved McClellan of command after Antietam.
