Advertisement for boxing match between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling, 1938
Framed advertisement for a World Heavyweight Championship boxing match between the African-American Joe Louis (1914-1981) and the German Max Schmeling (1905-2005), heavyweight champion of the world between 1930 and 1932. Louis won with a knockout in the first round. As a contest between representatives of the United States and Nazi Germany during the 1930s, the fight came to symbolise the struggle between democracy and Nazism. Jeffries is perhaps most famous for being United States "Great White Hope", since the nation expected him to come out of his retirement to beat the African-American boxer Jack Johnson. Johnson, the first Black American world heavyweight boxing champion, won the match and and retained the title
