Born in Birmingham, James Jem Carney (1856-1941) was a boxer who fought as a lightweight. He was English champion from 1884 until 1891 and in 1887 fought Jack McAuliffe for the World Championship in a gruelling 74 round fight that was declared a draw after 3 hours and 20 minutes
