Funeral of the Rev. Dr. Adler: scene at the grave, Willesden, 1890. The funeral of Dr. Adler, on Thursday, Jan. 23, in the cemetery of the "United Synagogue, " which is situated at Willesden, was an interesting ceremony. The body, having been brought up from Brighton on the day before the funeral, was taken to the Great Synagogue in Aldgate, where a procession of carriages was formed, and it was conveyed through London to Willesden, halting at the offices of the Synagogue in Great Portland-street. It was in a plain wooden coffin, covered with black cloth, bearing no inscription or ornament; within the coffin, as a pillow for the head, was a bag of earth from the Holy Land; the body lay in a white shroud...The chief mourners were the three sons - the Rev. Dr. Hermann Adler, Mr. Marcus Adler, and Mr. Elkan Adler...The funeral service, in Hebrew, was read by the Rev. Marcus Hast, of the Great Synagogue, in the chapel of the cemetery. The coffin was then borne to the grave and lowered into it, the three sons of the deceased Chief Rabbi assisting in this mournful task of duty'. From "Illustrated London News", 1890. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame.
