The Franklin Celebration: discovery of relics of the Franklin Expedition, 1895. On May 20, 1845, the Franklin Expedition set sail, never to return...The long silence which followed after the departure of Sir John presaged the tragedy which later search revealed...We reproduce an Illustration which appeared in this paper in 1881, by Mr. H. W. Klutschak, the artist of the American Franklin Search Expedition. It was commanded by Lieutenant Schwatka, and traversed the district from the northern shore of Hudson's Bay to Simpson's Strait and thence to the north-western coast of King William's Land. It was on the western shore of King William's Land that various relics of Sir John Franklin's expedition were found. The camp of Captain Crozier contained the obvious grave of Lieutenant Irving, third officer of the Terror. The remains of the young officer were transmitted to Edinburgh, where they were interred'. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame.
