Thomas Box, c1850s. Portrait of English cricketer Tom Box (1808-1876), remembered as one of the most outstanding wicketkeepers of his time. Box played for Sussex, and also for Marylebone Cricket Club, Hampshire and Surrey. In 1843 he leased the Hanover Arms public house in Lewes Road, Hove, which had the Royal New Ground attached. Box managed the matches there and it became popularly known as Boxs Ground
