Jack Hobbs, c1923, (1935). English cricketer Sir John Berry Hobbs (1882-1963) played for Surrey from 1905 until 1934 and played 61 test matches for England. On 8 May 1923 he made his hundredth century in first-class cricket. He ended his career having scored 61,760 runs, with 199 centuries. Gentlemen XI for the fixture vs Players at Lord's Cricket Ground, London, 1899. Gentlemen vs Players was an annual fixture between teams of amateurs (the Gentlemen) and professionals (the Players). The first match was played in 1806 and it became an annual fixture from 1819 onwards. It came to an end in 1962 when the distinction between amateur and professional players was ended.
