The Thames Tunnel (as it appeared when originally opened for traffic), (c1872)
The Thames Tunnel (as it appeared when originally opened for traffic), (c1872). The Thames Tunnel, connecting Wapping and Rotherhithe in London, was the first underwater tunnel in the world. It was designed by Sir Marc Isambard Brunel and ran underneath the River Thames. Completed as a foot tunnel in 1843, it was converted to a railway tunnel for the East London Railway in the 1860s.
