Sisters of Mersey, 1886. Sir E Watkin had proposed a scheme for a Channel Tunnel but this had not been accepted. This cartoon illustrates the newly constructed Mersey Tunnel that connected Liverpool and Birkenhead. It was formally opened by the Prince of Wales on 20th January 1886. It had been started in 1869.
