Samuel Wilberforce, English churchman, 1870. Wilberforce (1805-1873) at the time of his appointment as Bishop of Winchester in 1869. The son of William Wilberforce (1759-1833), philanthropist and campaigner for the abolition of slavery, he was a strong oppononent of Darwins theory of natural selection.
