Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin with his wife, 1962. Gagarin (1934-1968) married Valentina Goryacheva in 1957. He became the first man in space when he orbited the Earth aboard Vostok 1 on 12 April 1961. Gagarin was killed in a plane crash while on a routine training flight on 27 March 1968.
