Paddle steamer Pyroscaphe, 1783, (1900). Marquis de Jouffroy d Abbans (1751-1832) is claimed by the French as the first inventor of the steamboat. Pyroscape was an early experimental steamship built in 1783. The first demonstration of this ship was on 15 July 1783 on the river Saone in France.
