Shadwell, late superintendent of the International Exhibition: device on the address, 1862....rumour of wars has called away the gentleman who was nominated to the office of general manager of the Great Exhibition, 1862. Colonel Shadwell leaves...to join our army in Canada, the Superintendents of Classes of the International Exhibition presenting him with a memorial and a handsome signet ring in token of their regard, which were given last week (on the eve of the gallant gentleman's departure) at the Society of Arts. We engrave the device from the illuminated address...The device is emblematical of Peace and War, the caduceus being replaced by the sword; the open book of the departed year with the closed book of the future year. May it prove prosperous, and the great undertaking that is to stamp it find a stanch supporter in our Royal Mistress and her princely son!'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862
