Male dress, 16th century, (1910)
Male dress, 16th century, (1910). Continental costumes from the time of Elizabeth I, (1558-1603). The breeches had become enormously distended or bombasted. They reached to the knees where canions (rolls or extended cuffs) were attached round the legs above the calf, or to mid-thigh. They were ornamented by being paned, (similar to lattice windows), or slashed, and finished with canions below the knee. Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910)
