An Episode of the White Terror, 1815, (1896)
An Episode of the White Terror, 1815, (1896). General Count Jacques Laurent Gilly in hiding in a peasants house near Anduze in the South of France. The Second White Terror occurred after the overthrow of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) and the restoration of Louis XVIII to power. Those suspected of having ties with the governments of the French Revolution or of Napoleon risked arrest, imprisonment and execution. Gilly, a general under Napoleon, was condemned to death but later pardoned. Engraving after the painting by Louis-Ferdinand Pelez De Cordova. From Life of Napoleon Bonaparte, Volume IV, by William Milligan Sloane. [The Century Co. New York, 1896]
