Close up of Saturns rings, 1981. Taken by Voyager 2 the clear ring structure can be seen as well as the distinct gap in the rings. Two Voyager spacecraft were launched in 1977 to explore the planets in the outer solar system. Voyager 2 flew past Jupiter at 650, 000 kilometres in July 1979 before flying on to Saturn which it reached in August 1981
