The Christening in the Chapel, 1844. Creator: Unknown
The Christening in the Chapel, 1844. The ceremony of christening the infant daughter of the Marquis and Marchioness of Exeter...was performed by the Bishop of Peterborough...Her Majesty [Queen Victoria] attended at the ceremony, and occupied the seat in which it is stated Queen Elizabeth usually sat, when attending divine service at Burghley [House]. The infant was named after her Most Gracious Majesty. The Queen appeared to be very much interested in the ceremony. After it had concluded, her Majesty kissed the young godchild of her Royal Consort...When brought into the chapel the infant was fast asleep in its nurses arms. Immediately after the ceremony, Prince Albert presented to his little god-daughter a gorgeous gold cup, with the inscription: " To Lady Victoria Cecil, from her godfather Albert".
