Charlotte Corday after the murder of Marat, 1861. Artist: Paul-Jacques-Aime Baudry

Charlotte Corday after the murder of Marat, 1861. Charlotte Corday (1768-1793), a Girondin, stabbed Jean-Paul Marat, a radical Jacobin, to death in the bath at his home on 13 July 1793, having gained admission on the pretext of having information about a Girondin plot. Her action provoked severe reprisals against both Girondins and royalists. Corday herself was guillotined on 17 July for Marats murder. Found in the collection of the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Nantes
