Framed Print of Caves at Hastings: the Crypt, 1895. Creator: Unknown
Caves at Hastings: the Crypt, 1895. In 1814 Byron mentions "smuggling brandies and silk handkerchiefs " as among the delights of his visit to Hastings...To-day the only ones known to visitors are the "St. Clement's Caves, " which lie under the West Hill...They appear to have been discovered some time in the twenties of the present century, by a Mr. Scott...[who] obtained...permission to enlarge the natural cavity, and in this subterranean summer-house he was wont to entertain his friends...[In] about 1830, "The Caves" were leased to a Mr. Golding, who excavated very extensively, and made of them a show-place for visitors. The earliest "Guide" in which their attractions are mentioned is dated 1835...in winter [they were opened] once a month, the darkness being dispelled by "two hundred candles." Illuminations for a private party cost thirty shillings - on public days the charge per head was sixpence...The caves are well worth a visit. In summer they are lighted up every day and evening...The aesthetic visitor, however, will do well to select a day when the dim recesses are lighted only by the cluster of half-a-dozen candles which the guide takes in his hand. The endless succession of Rembrandtish effects as the guide meanders is delightful'. From "Illustrated London News", 1895.
