Carved openwork box, 1500-c1860, (1881). Creator: W Tucker
Carved openwork box, 1500-c1860, (1881). Etching of a small coffer of boxwood with engraved ivory fillets and wrought brass handle, made in France. Originally described as 16th century Venetian, this piece is a hybrid of gothic and classical ornament, most likely assembled from old pieces of wood in an Italian or French workshop at a much later date. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]
