Attack of Indians at Fort Dearborn, Illinois, 1812 (c1880). During the War of 1812, the order was given to evacuate Fort Dearborn in the Illinois territory on the site of the modern city of Chicago. A column of 148 soldiers, women and children set off from the fort but were ambushed by Potawotomi warriors allied to the British. 39 soldiers and 27 civilians were killed in what became known as the Fort Dearborn Massacre. The remainder of the complement from the fort were captured and sold to the British, who released them.
